Tips for Winter Driving in Maryland

Brought to You by Century Ford

We all know that winters in Maryland can be brutal, bitter cold temperatures and feet of snow falling that delay our days. When this happens, driving can become a hassle as you try to get to your destination on time and if you are not careful when behind the wheel, driving during the winter can be dangerous. It is important that you know how to safely navigate driving in winter weather so you can reach your destination safely. Our team here at Century Ford put together their best tips for safe winter driving tips, read them all below!

Tips for Driving During the Winter:

Book a Service Appointment: The first step to getting ready for winter driving is to make sure that your vehicle is ready for winter driving. Our service team here at Century Ford will help you make sure that your Ford vehicle is prepared. They will perform a winter tune-up, topping off the fluids that require it, change your oil, and check on your tires to make sure they have good tread and are properly inflated.

Drive Slowly: When you are driving during winter weather, or even after the plows have cleaned up the roads, it is important to take it slow. All the rain, slush and snow can create road conditions that are less than ideal and make it hard to stop on time. You need to make sure that you are accelerating and decelerating slowing to avoid losing traction. If you do lose traction, that can lead to you losing control of your vehicle.

Follow the 3-4 Second Rule: During good driving conditions, you should be following roughly 3 to 4 seconds behind the vehicle ahead of you. When winter weather starts, you should extend the following distance to at least 6 seconds but 8 seconds would be even better. This will give you ample space to break behind them on bad conditions.

Stay Alert: It is important that you are always alert when driving but it is even more important to make sure you are alert when driving during winter weather. You want to be aware of the road conditions, what other vehicles on the road around you are doing, and the speed limit. We also suggest that you avoid using cruise control when the roads are rough so that you have total control of your vehicle.

Prepare For Anything: Winter weather brings with it a lot of unpredictable conditions that may leave you stranded in your car in the worst case scenario. We want you to be totally prepared for anything that happens so we suggest you create a kit to keep in your vehicle. Things to include your kit are gloves, hats, blankets, additional layers of warm clothing, hand warmers, a flashlight with extra batteries, jumper cables, a small shovel, and a portable charger.
